Getting to and from school safely

As a parent or carer, it’s your responsibility to get your child to and from school safely. Student safety is our priority.

Keep our school community safe by:

  • driving and parking safely, even if it means parking further away and walking the rest of the way to school
  • being a good role model
  • never calling your child from across the road
  • using the safest place to cross the road.

Road Safety at Thirroul Public School - 2020

At Thirroul Public School we endeavor to keep all students safe.

Due to the nature of the location of our school we follow the guidelines from RMS in our teaching of Road Safety and strongly encourage parents to stay up-to-date with how to keep your child safe near roads. Click here for more information but we have highlighted some important information below.

It's great news that the Church Street Children's Crossing is now officially a supervised crossing. No children or adults should be on the crossing without Rachel (crossing supervisor). Rachel is on the crossing in the mornings between 8:30am and 9:00am and in the afternoons from 2:45pm until 3:15 pm. For more information on school crossings, please click here.

Please observe the road rules, be polite and respectful of the crossing supervisor and utilise the crossing safely. We will be working in classrooms with the students so that they know how to manage the changes on the Church Street crossing.

Ways to improve your child's safety:

  • Children up to eight years old should hold an adult's hand on the footpath, in the car park or when crossing the road.
  • Children up to 10 should be supervised around traffic and should hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
  • When walking with your children, talk to them about  about safe crossing procedures and traffic safety regulations.
  • Set a good example. Parents and carers are the best road safety teachers.
  • Teach your children to be aware of the traffic environment: distractions such as wearing headphones or playing with friends on the way to or from school can make them more vulnerable to danger.
  • Make sure your driving and parking are not endangering your own or others' children. Obey all parking signs and speed limits, and always be on the lookout for the unexpected. Many traffic safety issues around schools arise from the poor driving and parking behaviour of parents. This includes school dropoff. Please be mindful where you are stopping along Roxburgh Avenue n the mornings and afternoons. It is a very busy road and not safe for cars to pull up directly at the school gate.
  • Never call your child across the road.

For parents and carers of younger children

Discuss with your child how to be safe when:

Also talk about and practise:

  • safe travel routes
  • plans for when unexpected things happen
  • what to do in wet weather.

Subsidised school travel

Transport for NSW provides subsidies to assist school students.

  • The School Student Transport Scheme provides eligible students with free or subsidised travel on public transport between home and school.
  • The School Drive Subsidy may help towards the costs of driving children to school if you live in an area where there is no public transport.
