Thirroul Public School Uniform Policy

Purpose

The Thirroul Public School uniform promotes a sense of belonging, school pride and community identity. Wearing school uniform helps students feel connected to their school community, supports student safety and contributes to a positive learning environment.

The school uniform has been developed in consultation with the school community and is supported by the Parents and Citizens Association.

Uniform Expectations

Students are expected to wear school uniform each day.

Thirroul Public School offers a range of uniform items to meet the needs and preferences of students and families.

Students may wear any approved uniform item that forms part of the designated uniform for that day. This may include the everyday school uniform or the sport uniform on designated sport days and other occasions advised by the school.

All approved uniform items are available to all students. The school does not require students to wear particular uniform items based on their gender.

Uniform gallery

This is our school uniform for everyday and on formal occasions such as ANZAC Day Ceremonies, Presentation Day, School Photos, Remembrance Day, School Excursions, Choral and Instrumental Festivals.

Our school support the NO HAT NO PLAY Policy and all children are required to wear a school hat when outside in the sun.

Hats

Thirroul Public School is a Sun Safe school. Students are expected to wear a school hat whenever they are outdoors. Students who do not have a school hat will be directed to designated shaded areas during outdoor activities.

Footwear

Students are encouraged to wear grey or white socks and black enclosed shoes on regular school days. On sport days, students should wear white socks and appropriate sports footwear. All footwear should be enclosed, safe and suitable for school activities.

Jewellery and Watches

Students may wear:

• A watch that does not connect to the internet, make or receive calls, send or receive messages, take photographs, make recordings or access applications.
• Medical alert jewellery where required.
• One pair of small stud or sleeper earrings.

All other jewellery is not part of the school uniform and should not be worn to school.

Smartwatches are not permitted to be worn during the school day. Students who bring a smartwatch to school must hand it in to the school office on arrival. Stage 3 students may hand their smartwatch to their classroom teacher for secure storage during the school day.

Hair Accessories

Hair accessories such as scrunchies, hair ties, ribbons, clips and headbands may be worn. Hair accessories should be in school colours (royal blue, lemon, white or grey) and be practical and appropriate for school. Hair accessories in approved school patterns are available through the uniform shop.

Novelty accessories, costume items and accessories that pose a safety risk are not permitted.

Support for Families

The school recognises that circumstances may arise where the standard school uniform does not fully meet a student's needs. Parents and carers are encouraged to contact the Principal to discuss approved variations. The school will work collaboratively with families to identify practical and appropriate solutions that support the student's wellbeing, participation and sense of belonging while maintaining the spirit and intent of the school uniform.

The school also recognises that circumstances may arise where families require assistance with the purchase of uniform items. Families experiencing difficulty obtaining or purchasing uniform items are encouraged to contact the school uniform shop, which offers a range of quality second-hand uniform items at reduced cost. Families may also contact the Principal to discuss available support options. All requests for assistance will be managed sensitively and confidentially.

Labelling Uniform Items

Parents and carers are encouraged to clearly label all uniform items and personal belongings with their child's name.

Implementation

School staff will encourage and support students to wear school uniform and will work collaboratively with families where concerns arise. The focus of the school's approach is education, encouragement and partnership with families.

Where a student is repeatedly not wearing school uniform and no approved variation has been arranged, the matter may be addressed in accordance with the school's Student Wellbeing Procedures and Policy. The school will always seek to work with students and families to understand and address any barriers to wearing school uniform.

This policy will be reviewed periodically in consultation with students, staff, parents and the Parents and Citizens Association.

Uniforms will be distributed to the child during the last hour of the day to take home. Please ensure your child’s class is accurately recorded. You can ring the school office for any further enquiries.
