Kindy & Year 1

In Kindy and Year 1 the focus continues to be on enjoyment of literature. Students will participate in shared reading experiences of quality text followed by discussion and an activity. Chosen books include previous titles shortlisted by the Children's Book Council of Australia and other titles linked to topics being studied in the classroom.

Students will be encouraged to borrow a picture book or a simple chapter book that parents or caregivers can read with or to them. Shared, positive reading experiences at home have been linked to increased literacy rates, with even older, confident readers still enjoying being read to.

Stage 2 & Stage 3

Library sessions involve developing students' digital literacy skills through both explicit instruction and guided inquiry. Projects are conducted over one semester and are designed to support curriculum learning being done in the classroom. Students participate in learning about a topic, after which they are guided to developing their own lines of inquiry. The theory behind this method is that students are able to design their own research question that is of interest to them, rather than having one assigned them. Scaffolding, books and websites are supplied, providing a base from which to begin and support to students who need it. These sites are collected on a website that students can access from school and home through their DET Student Portal.
